What are their records like?
Kazakhstan’s Golovkin, who has an unbeaten professional record with 37 wins and 33 knockouts, will put his middleweight titles on the line against Alvarez, whose only loss came against Floyd Mayweather.
Nicknamed ‘GGG’, Golovkin’s last bout was back in March when the 35-year-old beat America’s Daniel Jacobs by unanimous points decision.
Before that, he stopped Kell Brook with a fifth-round technical knockout.
Brook’s team threw in the towel after the Sheffield-born fighter sustained a fractured eye socket in a gruelling five rounds of boxing.
Brook said Golovkin, who is renowned as one of boxing’s hardest hitters, could have blinded him he had landed just a few more jabs.
‘”I told my trainer in round two that my eye was broken and that I couldn’t see so he was aware of what was going on in the fight,” Brook told Sky Sports.
“I did want to fight on because I’m a fighter but in the long run, the doctor said if I’d have taken more shots I could have been blinded.,” he added.
Alvarez himself is a former welterweight and super welterweight champion who comes into the fight with a similarly impressive record.
The Mexican’s only defeat came by decision at the hands of Floyd Mayweather and the American believes Alvarez will take Golovkin’s unbeaten record.
“Do I think Triple G can beat Canelo? Absolutely not,” said Mayweather.
“I think there’s a few guys that can beat Triple G, and Canelo is on the top of the list. I believe that he’ll beat him.
“He’s got good punching power, but he’s flat-footed.”
What are they saying?
“I think people understand what is a true fight, a boxing fight, like mine with Canelo or a big show, maybe sometimes for people a funny show, like a circus show.
“This [Mayweather-McGregor] is not for fighters, but business.
“Everybody knows – Conor is not boxer, just show. If you want to watch a show please watch them, if you want to watch a true fight, a true boxing fight and you respect boxing, watch my fight with Canelo.
“This is business. Conor with Floyd is not a boxing fight because Conor is not a boxer. Money fight OK, show fight OK.”
Alvarez joined his opponent in billing the fight as a match ‘boxing fans want to see’.
“This is the fight the fans wanted, demanded,” Alvarez said.
“They demanded the fight, so to question whether they’re going to see it or not, there shouldn’t be a question. This is the fight that was demanded and we’re happy to give it to them.
“It’s two fighters at their best, their peak, and a very high level, and they’re going to be fighting each other and giving their best, so the fans are the ones who are going to enjoy this fight.”
